STEP Lab is collaborating with U.S.-based research institute SRI to develop a next-generation optical payload and a 16U-class small satellite system for space domain awareness (SDA) missions.

The project is being carried out under the Defense Innovation Company Support Program administered by the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement. STEP Lab plans to combine its space optics and microvibration mitigation technologies with SRI’s imaging sensor and onboard AI technologies. The team aims to develop a payload capable of detecting and identifying objects in space, then integrate and validate it on a small satellite platform.

Through this collaboration, STEP Lab aims to expand its capabilities beyond space mechanisms into advanced payloads and small satellite systems, while building a foundation for participation in the global defense space market.
